From The Eclectic Church

 A Message To Our Visitors

and Friends:

Dear Friend,

Do you sometimes feel that the religious ideologies of our world are too rooted in supernatural speculation? Do you ever wonder why religions do not place the problems of humanity (as they pertain to this life), as the priority? Are you one of the people who believe in God but cannot accept the dogmatic and archaic positions of so many of the existing religious institutions? Do you feel faith should be harmonious with reality as we have come to understand it? Do you feel that God's inspiration is to everyone and transcends one faith? Does it seem to you that religion is often more preoccupied with the salvation of the soul in a world to come, rather than, addressing the salvation of the living for so many destitute human beings?

Based upon these and other questions, driven by faith and concern, we are striving to build a new religious ideology that is practical, relevant to our time, and responsible to the needs of everyday life. We believe that theology should address the needs of the living, allowing God to be visible in the reality of the miracle of His/Her creation. Religiously, we seem to be seeking heaven; but could we be worthy of such when we have not yet become responsible to each other and the earth God placed us in? Religiously, so many people sing their praises to God in their churches; but often in the shadows of those churches people live in human misery? The so-called "WORD", and faith in It, are proclaimed to the ends of the globe; but one has to wonder, where is the practical reality of that faith in the everyday lives of the societies in our world? Where is the "love of one's neighbor" that has been inspired from the time of Plato to the psychology of C.G. Jung - - From the writings of Isaiah to the Gospel of Jesus -- From the teachings of Buddha to the faith of Muhammad?

There is a need to reexamine our beliefs in God. People need to rethink the message of the Gospels. Despite the dogma of many religions, until faith becomes meaningful in reality -- until men learn to love one another recognizing the Divine quality that is in all human beings -- our faith in God is nothing but a proclamation of empty words. Love is not spoken; it is expressed in all we do! The love of God is expressed by our treatment of what is of God -- Her Creation.

If man is truly in the Image of God, it is only by loving, respecting, and taking care of one another that we can offer thanks and praise to the Force, which created us. The sum total of our faith and worship of God are in our interactions with creation -- in our effort to lessen human misery and suffering -- in our working toward equality and dignity for all men and women -- in our striving for the eradication of injustice and prejudice. Life is our most precious gift from God. Mankind has not been cast from Eden; but dwells within it! It is not God who fails us, it is we who fail ourselves by blinding ourselves to the real presence of God within the true miracle of creation itself.

Our fundamental approach to this task is in a combination of the various religious and philosophical inspirations (including those of our own age) which are present in the form of archetypes in all the human knowledge of mankind. We see a universal message that is to all peoples, and these messages could help advance our interrelationships with each other as well as with God. We also contend that God's inspiration has not ended, but is with us today in the minds and hearts of individuals who would commit to making the reality, of which we are a part, a better world for all.

We know that God's inspiration is of the past too. But we see that inspiration as meant to convey ideals, which are presented in symbolic (not literal) ways. We feel that mankind has lost the true value of these inspirations by their desire to dogmatize and liberalize these wonderful gifts from God. Our theologies are too rooted in the supernatural, lacking a practical approach to modern day living. Many of our religions are offering us magical escapes, instead of encouraging us to be more personally responsible for ourselves.

Our aim is not to declare God's Truth, but help people discover God's truth within the human heart; using such truth to improve ourselves, our relationships with each other, and work together in a practical way to improve our world.

We move forward realizing God has nothing to fear from our questions. It is time for men and women to look at what we proclaim in faith and compare it to what we are in reality. If you have the courage to face this challenge -- if you feel humanity can be more than it is -- if you see God differently than He/She is preached -- if you see something lacking in our world: then, these ideals may be for you.
